Houston Native Plants Guide

If you know nothing else about native plants of Houston (and Texas in general) .. the take away knowledge nugget for you is “echinacea”.

This is an absurdly tough flowering plant genus that butterflies love to spoil with their lofty love whispers. And they are a lazy gardener’s dream plant. No time to tend the garden?  Astros in the playoffs and better things to do? That’s not really an issue for crazy echinacea purpurea. In fact it will probably grow another 4 inches by half time .. water or not.

Early Years of Houston

In 1836 two brothers John and Augustus Allen paid $1.40 an acre for over 6000 acres. For the next 3 decades Houston grew as an important commercial center for cotton transportation via the new railroad. By the turn of the century Houston had grown to be the 85th largest city in the United States. In 1901 oil was discovered in the area and “fueled” more growth. Then came NASA in 1961 and the Astrodome in 1965. During the 1970s with trouble  in the Middle East driving oil prices high and higher, the population of Houston grew by 1000 people each week as oil production in the area became even more significant. Then came the 1980s with a collapse in oil and real estate prices. These days, it’s not oil so much as biotech and healthcare that is driving Houston’s economy. According to some Houston lawyers the next boom may be in distributed legal services.

Houston Guides Has Arrived on WordPress

I’m finally able to setup a special blog for the Houston area. It’s been a very busy month so far what with the moving and coordinating the trip with Betty and her friends. I’m looking forward to getting the store setup and arranging the packing lists like we talked about late last year. I hope she still has the itinerary on her iphone .. that’s better than a separate GPS for tripping I think .. one less gadget to worry about running out of juice on a hike around Houston off the grid. I also know I’ll need to see a doctor in Houston about the ankle.

Amazing to think that it’s only been a short 3 years since we met and here we are planning this trip. I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures .. the iphone has the camera too .. although I still cling to my blackberry like a pirate to a bottle of rum.
